Why this worksPublished research · checked 2 Oct 2026

Plain results from published studies. None tested Luwy itself; they test the methods it uses.

  • Pressure that rises1,837 people. In 37 studies, people who trained under stress, in steps, felt less anxious and performed better when the pressure was real. Saunders et al. (1996)
  • Audience mode40 speakers. A hostile virtual audience made speakers anxious, including speakers who normally felt confident. Pertaub et al. (2002)
  • Retry and Prove it61 studies. Across 61 studies, trying to recall beat re-studying (ahead of about 7 in 10), and getting feedback on the attempt nearly doubled the benefit. Rowland (2014)
  • Read the roomWorked in every area. In a review, training improved how accurately adults read other people, in every skill area studied. Blanch-Hartigan et al. (2012)
  • Register coaching39 studies. Across 39 studies, teaching polite requests and refusals improved learners' ability, computer-based teaching did at least as well as face to face, and the gains lasted. Yousefi & Nassaji (2019)
  • Speak clearly86 studies. Across 86 reports, pronunciation teaching had a large effect, and a bigger one when it ran longer and included feedback. Lee et al. (2015)
  • Goal-driven characters16 studies. Across 16 studies, talking with a dialogue system improved second-language speaking (ahead of about 7 in 10), and systems with a goal did best. Hou & Min (2026)
  • Safe rehearsal27 students finished. University students with high public-speaking anxiety used a self-guided virtual rehearsal and reported less anxiety afterwards and one month later. Premkumar et al. (2021)
Built for Malaysians
  • Built for Malaysia24th of 123 countries. Malaysia ranks 24th of 123 countries on the 2025 EF English index, well above the world average. Reading and listening scores say little about speaking under pressure. EF Education First (2025)
  • Built for Malaysia120 undergraduates. Most of 120 undergraduates at a Malaysian public university had a moderate level of English speaking anxiety. Fear of being judged was the biggest cause, and anxiety was not linked to how good their English was. Tie (2020)
  • Built for Malaysia60 students surveyed. Malaysian Chinese undergraduates at a private university showed moderate anxiety when presenting, and said they coped mostly by rehearsing and practising beforehand. AlShaibani et al. (2022)
